Pages 64-67 is a self-portrait of my 45th St. studio with me painting a model who strongly reminded me of Rembrandt’s wife, Saskia. It was one of the larger paintings (40” x 50”) of this period. The actual studio, in an old New York loft building, was 100’ long by 25’ wide. Ascending five flights of stairs sometimes five or six times a day kept me in great shape. The north side was all windows, as was the south. It was, therefore, necessary to paint all the glass on the south side black. It had no insulation in the ceiling or roof and in the summer the heat was just a neuron short of unbearable. During the winter, on the other hand, I made use of the potbelly stove for heat as well as a receptacle for ‘bad’ paintings. It’s called suffering for one’s ‘art’!
